#2 – Ozzfest ’01 – 6/19/01

2 - Ozzfest 01

So this is where I wish I had my clear memories back.   I think I tried to be cool and act like this was my first show but I gave that up and stopped hiding behind my Papa Roach show.  I picked the wrong year to start going as I would miss Pantera (R.I.P.) who played only the year before.  This festival still had several bands that were heavy on nu-metal.  This turned out to be easily the longest day I have had in my life.  Not exactly balmy temperature in Kansas City in June, I was joyed to find out that it also ended up raining on us the whole day.  Shorts were a very bad idea.

I wish I could remember many of the bands from the day.  Most of the side stage bands are bands I wouldn’t ever get to see again or would not see again for many years after (Godhead, Beautiful Creatures, and American Head Charge).

The first band I remember being amazing is Union Underground.  They did all the songs that I would have wanted them to do. This was my first memory of being legit excited to ever see a band and they didn’t disappoint me.  I still have hope that they get back together and tour so I can get a chance to see all these songs I loved when I was in high school.

…An Education In Rebellion
South Texas Deathride
Natural High
Killing the Fly
Turn Me On Mr. Deadman

I very vaguely remember Nonpoint.  I remember hearing them do What A Day but in all honesty I don’t really remember much else from them.

Don’t recall anything from Taproot but did find a set online.

Mirror’s Reflection
Day by Day
Dragged Down
Again & Again
Emotional Times

I don’t remember much from Drowning Pool outside of Bodies. But I do know that song got the biggest reaction of the day up to that point.  Don’t remember these but I did find a setlist online for Drowning Pool.

All Over Me
Tear Away

I remember Mudvayne was pretty incredible even though I don’t recall a lot of their set.  I do remember the song Nothing to Gein was the best song of their set.  To my knowledge I don’t recall that song being done too much after the touring for LD 50 was over.  Did get a set for them too.

Internal Primates Forever
Death Blooms
Nothing to Gein

Now onto the main stage, Black Label Society was the openers.  Knew nothing of them at that time, honestly I wasn’t even digging them.  They just basically looked like a motorcycle gang on stage.  If I only knew them back then and how great of a set they were doing at that time compared to the stale setlists they do now.  And of course BLS doesn’t even do 3 out of these 4 songs anymore.  That’s my luck I guess.

All for You
The Beginning… At Last
No More Tears

After them was Disturbed and I can honestly say they were really amazing first time seeing them back then.  Part fresh performance, part being 17 at that time. Did all the good stuff from “The Sickness”, the only real embarrassing song was doing that Tears for Fears cover song Shout.  After UU they were my favorite performance on the day.  I still think 2000 was the best that Disturbed would ever be.  Still got full set for Disturbed

The Game
Violence Fetish
Droppin’ Plates
Shout 2000
Down With The Sickness

Next band up was Crazy Town.  Wow, were they any good? No not even close.  That is the first time where I have actually felt badly for somebody on stage like I did for Crazy Town.  Crowd was just brutal and god awful to them.  I didn’t think they were good but still heavier than what I would have guessed.  But this was not the right environment for them at all.  And that was proven within weeks as they would drop off of Ozzfest.  By around the time Crazy Town was on it was still raining, and raining, and raining.  Mud was then being thrown from the lawn onto the lower seats and it was a little ridiculous having to be facing towards the side not to get hit by mud.  I would be ridiculed by others for leaving early.

Think Fast
Only When I’m Drunk
Hollywood Babylon
B-Boy 2000

By the time Papa Roach was on stage it was just too much, I could last no more.  The two of us would depart before Linkin Park, Slipknot, Manson & Black Sabbath.  I did see some of Papa Roach and still have a set for them.

Dead Cell
Blood Brothers
Between Angels and Insects
Walking Thru Barbed Wire
Broken Home
Never Enough
Last Resort

Still my biggest concert regret that will probably not go away but luckily I have seen all 4 of those other bands by this point and the regret isn’t as bad.  My first festival and my 16 year old self was not able to conquer Ozzfest this time around but I would get my hands on Ozzfest several more times after this.
